Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, is a symbol of new beginnings, heritage, and togetherness. Observed on 14 April, it marks the first day of the Bangla calendar and has been celebrated for centuries across Bengal.
Rooted in agrarian traditions, Pohela Boishakh was once closely tied to harvest cycles and rural life. In gram Bangla, Boishakhi Melas (village fair) bring communities together through folk music, local crafts, traditional food, and shared celebration. Customs like Haal Khata, the opening of new account books, and the exchange of sweets reflect renewal, goodwill, and the spirit of fresh beginnings.
In Dhaka, the celebration carries a deep cultural legacy. Since the 1960s, Ramna Batamul has been a central gathering place, where cultural programs organized by Chhayanaut begin the day with Rabindra Sangeet and traditional performances. This long-standing tradition remains one of the most meaningful parts of Boishakh in the city.
The Mangal Shobhajatra, initiated in 1989 by the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Dhaka, is another defining feature of the celebration. Recognized by UNESCO in 2016, it represents unity, peace, and cultural identity through its symbolic masks and artistic expressions.
Today, Pohela Boishakh in Dhaka is celebrated with vibrant energy. People wear traditional attire, attend cultural programs, share festive meals like Panta-Ilish, and spend time with family and friends, keeping both tradition and modern expression alive.
