Community Guideline

Do’s and Don’ts for Otithi clients

Do’s for Otithi Guests

  • Embrace Local Culture: Every community has unique traditions, values, and ways of life. By dressing modestly—especially at sacred or religious sites—and showing cultural sensitivity, you help create mutual respect between guests and hosts.
  • Follow Your Guide’s Lead: Our guides are your companions and caretakers throughout the journey. Listening to their instructions ensures not only your safety but also a smoother, more enriching experience for all.
  • Connect Kindly with Locals: A simple smile or greeting goes a long way. When interacting with community members, please be courteous and always ask before taking photographs or entering private spaces.
  • Care for the Environment: The beauty of nature and heritage belongs to everyone. Kindly use waste bins, avoid littering, and leave each place as pristine as you found it.
  • Support Local Livelihoods: Your choices matter. Buying local crafts, food, or souvenirs directly supports families and helps preserve cultural heritage.
  • Value Time: Being on time allows tours to run smoothly and shows thoughtfulness toward fellow travelers.
  • Stay Curious: Feel free to ask your guide about history, traditions, or daily life—it’s a wonderful way to deepen your experience and appreciation.
  • Travel Comfortably: Carry essentials such as water, sunscreen, and personal items so you remain refreshed and comfortable throughout the journey.
  • Share Your Needs: If you have dietary preferences, health conditions, or special requirements, letting us know in advance helps us make your journey more enjoyable.
  • Offer Your Feedback: Your reflections and suggestions help us improve and continue creating meaningful experiences for future guests.

Don’ts for Otithi Guests

  • Avoid Disturbing Wildlife: Animals are best admired from a distance. Feeding or interfering with them can harm both the wildlife and the ecosystem.
  • Respect Heritage Sites: Historic and cultural sites are treasures to be preserved. Please refrain from climbing, scratching, or touching artefacts and structures.
  • Maintain Respectful Behaviour: Out of care for the community and fellow travellers, avoid loud voices or gestures that might feel disruptive or offensive.
  • Prioritize Safety: Wandering away from the group or ignoring safety guidelines can put you at risk. Staying together ensures a safe and enjoyable journey for all.
  • Leave Nature Untouched: Plants, shells, stones, and other natural elements are part of the ecosystem. Please enjoy their beauty without taking them away.
  • Be Gentle When Bargaining: Negotiating is part of the culture in some areas, but kindness and respect make the interaction positive for both sides.
  • Respect Rules on Smoking and Drinking: Some areas—especially sacred or community spaces—may have restrictions. Kindly follow these to honour the local environment.
  • Don’t Overstay in Sensitive Spaces: Some places may have limited access or privacy needs. A respectful visit means leaving before your presence becomes intrusive.
  • Seek Permission Before Using Drones: For safety and privacy reasons, please check before flying drones, especially around communities or heritage sites.
  • Protect Your Privacy: We encourage warm interactions, but please be cautious about sharing personal details with people you’ve just met.
  • Check Before Taking Photos: Certain areas may be sensitive or restricted. Asking your guide first helps ensure your photography is respectful and appropriate.
